"Wow!" Seven year old Michael Duane stared in awe at his first tornado. Fearful excitement flooded through him, but towering clouds that boiled and rotated compelled him to watch. Even today Michael never tires of storms. When one approaches, it draws him outside to experience it. He infuses his paintings with that same "wow" factor that he first felt as a child.

Michael was born in Kansas City, Missouri and grew up in Overland Park, Kansas where he still makes his home today.  He’s had a love of the visual arts since he was a young boy.  He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts/Design from the University of Kansas in 1980.

Over the years, he’s created many kinds of art, from caricatures in pen and ink to to landscapes in watercolor and acrylic.  Several years ago, he took up pastels exclusively, impressed by the bold, pure colors and the immediacy of the medium.  He found his niche by combining his love of art with a lifelong fascination with the weather which began after that first tornado experience.

Michael is passionate about his subject matter and believes
his art is evolving because of this passion.

In a different style for the medium,  he rubs the pastels into the paper creating smooth shapes  with less detail rather than building texture through individual strokes, thus a more contemporary look.

Frequent trips within his home state of Kansas provide a wealth of incredible Midwest weather that he’s combined with the beautiful, scenic Flint Hills.  Occasionally, man made objects such as a winding road,  an abandoned house or barn, or an old truck,  find their way into his art.

While Kansas remains the main inspiration for his art, Michael is expanding his scope by exploring other areas as well.  His goals have always been to continue to push his art, to keep it evolving and fresh, while maintaining the style he’s created, as well as to show the awesome power and beauty of Mother Nature.

Michael has achieved both Signature and Master Pastelist status in the Mid America Pastel Society and has been
awarded the prestigious Signature Status in the
Pastel Society of America.
